The Abu Dhabi Police have introduced self-luminous panels at the building of the Directorate General of Central Operations, including the Operations Room. The panels store solar power and power generated by other light sources, which light up when it’s dark to help people find their way towards exits and other directions.
Lt. Colonel Nasser Suleiman Al Maskari, Head of the Operations Department, explained that Abu Dhabi Police is the first government entity to use this new technology in the Middle East to enhance protection of lives and property, improve efficiency and resources rationalization
Lt. Colonel Al Maskari said, “The panels store solar power for use in the dark; they glow in sensible areas that become obscured by rising smoke for example during a fire.” Adding further, he noted that these self-luminous panels are environmentally-friendly because they have a virtually long lifespan of up to 20 years, they do not need to be connected to an electrical source such as batteries, they operate for 17 continuous hours using its own power and in the absence of any light source, and can withstand different weather conditions.
Adding further, Major Al Marzouqi said that this self-luminous material is also available in the form of luminous paint to paint road signs that indicate slippery roads. They can be used as coating on buildings, facilities and assembly points during accidents, as well as coating for emergency tools necessary for aid, search and rescue operations such as helmets and clothing used by traffic police and civil defense members, whose tasks often require them to work on dark roads or during extreme weather conditions such as fog and heavy rain.
