Aakash Jayaprakash, a researcher working on the Migrant Worker Welfare Initiative, has started an Twitter campaign to increase awareness about labour rights in Qatar.
So far the support had been encouraging for Aakash who says that the "blame is often placed squarely on the Qatar government, with little exploration of the many facets of the problem".He has been encouraging residents of Qatar to play their part in addressing the labour issues in the form of 'whatiwilldo' to resolve this issue.
'People have a responsibility too. Unrealistic to expect the #qatari govt to fix all problems for everyone. Play your role in society' said, Jayaprakash.
People of we have all seen the reports on workers here (male+female). We know it. What r u going to do about it? Share — Aakash Jayaprakash (@Aakash_Jay)
Below is an analysis of the campaign so far on Twittter.
Below is a documentary featuring Aakash highlighting the labour issues in the country .
Apparently there is hotline (800 6611) to report any violation of the labour law like confiscation of passports and non-payment of wages. You could also write an email highlighting details of the complaint.
In case you want to read more about labour rights in qatar, visit the International Labour Organization for more details. Qatar won the rights to host the 2020 FIFA World Cup and there is an increase in demand for importing labour to help build the infrastructure in the country.
hotline (800 6611) is NOT IN SERVICE and i’m sure email’s don’t get any response. Brilliant!!
