According to a research by Channel EMEA consumer electronic retailers in the Middle East have caught up with Social Media. Retailers in Saudi Arabia have the most number of followers on Twitter and Facebook.

Big box retailer Extra takes the lead on both Twitter (83,189 followers) and Facebook (450,000 likes ). Rival retailer Jarir Bookstore has boosted its number of Twitter followers by 86% in the last eight months to 68.271. Jarir has also now achieved approximately 320,000 likes on Facebook.

Xcite Ghanim from Kuwait are at the 3rd place with 16,550 Twitter followers followed by Virgin Megastore with 11,773 followers.

The MERA research showed a surprising lack of Twitter followers for both Emax () on 268 and Plug-Ins () on 145.

The three companies that did not make the Facebook top ten were Electrozan, Jackys and CompuMe. They were replaced in the Facebook top ten by PC Zone Jordan, Computer Shop Egypt and Leaders Jordan

The number of followers on Social Media doesn’t necessary dictate the retailer sales and profit in the same order.

The MERA Twitter Tracker, which looks exclusively at pure-play ICT and consumer electronics (CE) retailers, was first launched at the end of 2011 to examine how developed ICT and CE retailers across the region were in terms of their use of social media to reach out to consumers
